Fifty-five percent of Americans suffer from venous disease from simple unsightly spider veins to painful, tortuous, ugly varicose veins. Although many desire treatment for cosmetic purposes, still many more seek treatment for symptoms of venous disorder, i.e. pain and aching from prolonged standing, fatigue in legs, burning sensation, heaviness, cramping and sometimes swelling. A particularly bad problem can be ulcers on the lower legs.
Heredity is the number one factor that causes varicose and spider veins. Other factors include puberty, injury, and hormones.
How does it start? There is an abnormality in the venous return of blood from the legs to the heart. Pressure in the legs gradually increases causing the veins to become dilated. This causes the one-way valves in the legs to become incompetent, thus allowing an accumulation of de-oxygenated blood in the legs. This oxygen-poor blood makes the legs tired and heavy. This can also affect the skin, especially around the ankles leading to itching, discoloration, and possible ulcers.
How can veins be treated? Advances in the treatment of varicose and spider veins have come a long way in the past few years. We have progressed from stripping veins in an operating to treating these same veins in an office with local anesthesia.

*SCLEROTHERAPY: Injection of veins with a solution to close the spider veins. This is still the gold standard. Very effective, sclerotherapy has a low risk of side effects, the most common are hyperpigmentation, small ulcers that heal, and matting.
*ULTRASOUND GUIDED INJECTIONS WITH FOAM: The most recent and highly effective way to treat veins that once required surger under snesthesia. This is don in the office in as little time as 30 minutes. Patients that wish to avoid the high cost of out-patient surgery and general anesthesia can now have their veins effectively treated with this procedure.
**Ambulatory Phlebectomy: An in-0ffice procedure that eliminates large, bulging veins through a very small incision in the skin. This procedure gives nice results in as little as 7 days.
